IReF Reporting Built Natively into SAP S/4HANA
Integrated Reporting Suite by paricon
Meet supervisory reporting requirements efficiently – with the BIRD / IReF Suite from paricon. The suite implements the ECB’s BIRD (Banks’ Integrated Reporting Dictionary) and IReF (Integrated Reporting Framework) data model inside your SAP environment, maps and transforms data automatically, and delivers regulatory output entirely within SAP S/4HANA.
In SAP, not
a side platform
No parallel tool landscape, no redundant data, audit-ready in your existing system.
HANA performance for live reporting, simulation, and parallel operation.
ECB updates
under control
Adopt data models and rules in a structured way and version them cleanly.
Start with data integration and mapping, then expand the scope in a controlled way.
Lay the foundations for IReF now
The IReF roadmap is moving into the implementation phase. The ECB currently plans to launch IReF reporting in Q4 2029 – institutions need to set up preparation, piloting, and parallel operation early to go live on time.
Sensible steps to start now: identify data sources and gaps (SAP and non-SAP), define the BIRD target data model and mapping, automate transformation, validation, and audit trails, and prepare pilot and parallel operation early. The paricon BIRD / IReF Suite (an ABAP add-on for SAP S/4HANA) supports the end-to-end process: data integration, AI-assisted mapping, rule-based transformation and validation, and reporting output – with no additional platforms required.
The Challenge of Implementing IReF and BIRD
Vendor Lock-in
Proprietary black-box solutions create heavy vendor dependency – a material risk under DORA (Digital Operational Resilience Act).

Vendor Lock-in
Proprietary reporting platforms often operate as black boxes: their internal logic is opaque, every change requires costly vendor services, and switching providers triggers heavy migration costs. Since January 2025, DORA requires a complete register of all ICT third-party arrangements and contractual audit rights. Violations can be sanctioned with penalties of up to 2 % of global turnover and up to EUR 1 million in personal liability for senior management. An ABAP-based SAP regulatory reporting solution built on open standards (the BIRD data model) gives you full control – without vendor dependency.
Cloud is not always a fit
Policy and IT strategy are not cloud-ready in every institution.

Cloud is not always a fit
Many regulatory reporting vendors mandate cloud deployment – yet for a large share of financial institutions that is not a viable option. Strict BaFin and ECB requirements, IT security policies, and ongoing on-prem investments make a near-term move impractical. Since January 2025, DORA requires a complete register of all ICT third-party arrangements with contractual audit rights – external cloud solutions significantly increase the documentation burden. A reporting solution running directly inside SAP S/4HANA removes that obstacle.
Complexity & Risk
Each additional external tool adds integration effort and potential security exposure across the system landscape.

Complexity & Risk
Every additional external tool in the regulatory reporting chain adds integration overhead: data has to be extracted from SAP, transformed, and loaded into third-party systems – each step bringing its own interfaces and failure points. BIRD reporting requires multiple data transformation layers. DORA mandates immutable audit trails and automated log aggregation across all ICT systems – every external component has to be fully audited. A SAP-native regulatory reporting solution that maps BIRD/IReF directly inside S/4HANA reduces integration and compliance complexity to a minimum.
Project effort spirals
Data harmonisation, model migrations, and reconciliation drive both timelines and cost.

Project effort spirals
The shift to IReF/BIRD marks a paradigm change in regulatory reporting: instead of form-centric returns, the focus moves to delivering granular, standardised data points. For banks, that means more than new reporting requirements – it forces a ground-up review of data models, data quality, governance, and reporting processes. Regulatory effort is already rising sharply today: financial crime compliance studies report rising costs at 98 % of financial institutions in EMEA and 99 % in the USA and Canada; on top of that, the time banks spend on regulatory activities rose by 61 % between 2016 and 2023. The detailed IReF implementation plan is expected in H1 2026, and reporting go-live is currently planned for Q4 2029 – preceded by a one-year pilot phase. Standardising SAP regulatory reporting early reduces fragmentation, reconciliation effort, and project risk.
The paricon BIRD / IReF Suite is an ABAP add-on for SAP S/4HANA that maps the ECB’s BIRD data model into SAP and generates IReF-relevant result data directly inside the system. It covers the full process – from data integration and mapping through rule-based transformation, validation, and output for reporting. The result: a SAP-native architecture with no additional platforms.
Data integration: connect every relevant source system, whether high-granularity SAP data or non-SAP data. Automated mapping: AI-assisted field mapping accelerates the move into BIRD format. Transformation & validation: apply the BIRD ruleset with continuous validation checks to ensure completeness and correctness. Output & analytics: deliver regulatory output formats plus drill-downs and access via common BI tools (e.g. SAC, Power BI, Tableau) for integrated analysis.
